Medicare Advantage plans are private health plans that are approved by Medicare, and are paid fixed subsidies to provide Medicare beneficiaries’ benefits. Just like normal private health plans on the market, there are several types of Medicare Advantage plans. Health Maintenance Organizations (HMO), Preferred Provider Organizations (PPO), and Private Fee-For Service (PFFS) plans. Most beneficiaries are still required to pay their monthly Part A and/or Part B premium, A Medicare Advantage Plan combines your Medicare Hospitalization (Part A) and Medical insurance (Part B) into one Health Plan that provides the same Medically-Necessary services as original Medicare.
Medicare Part D is a federal program to subsidize the costs of prescription drugs for Medicare beneficiaries in the United States. It was enacted as part of the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act of 2003 (MMA) and went into effect on January 1, 2006.
Individuals are eligible for prescription drug coverage under a Part D plan if they are entitled to benefits under Medicare Part A and/or enrolled in Part B. Beneficiaries can obtain the Part D drug benefit through two types of private plans: they can join a Prescription Drug Plan (PDP) for drug coverage only or they can join a Medicare Advantage plan (MA) that covers both medical services and prescription drugs (MA-PD).
Medicare Supplement refers to various private supplemental health insurance plans sold to Medicare beneficiaries in the United States that provide coverage for medical expenses not or only partially covered by Medicare.
A person must be enrolled in part A and B of Medicare before they can enroll in a Supplement plan. During the open enrollment period which begins within 6 months of turning 65 or enrolling in Medicare Part B at 65 or older, a person may obtain a Supplement plan on a guaranteed issue basis (i.e. no medical screening required). Outside of open enrollment, the issuing insurance company may require medical screening and may obtain an attending physician's statement if necessary. Medicare Supplement insurance is not compatible with other forms of private Medicare coverage,
